WBA Salutes 2012 Olympic Women’s Boxing Champions

The World Boxing Association sends its warmest greetings and words of admiration to all Olympic boxers who made history in London 2012, especially to the three champions, Nicola Adams, Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields.

Undoubtedly, all participants had a dream to reach the top sporting event, and are now part of history being the first women in this type of event.

Of these, we express our congratulations to the winners, Britain’s Nicola Adams, Ireland’s Katie Taylor and American Claressa Shields.

Adams will go down in history as the first Olympic boxing champion as she won by points (16-7) against Ren Cancan of China in the flyweight final.

We also note the extraordinary merit of Taylor, who won the gold by defeating Russia’s Sofia Ochigava in the lightweight division. This is the first medal for her country after 16 years because Ireland had not won gold in the Olympics since Atlanta.

For her part, 17 year-old Shields won the only gold for her country at the boxing event in London 2012, beating Russian Nadezda Torlopova at middleweight.

Shields is the youngest boxer to win an Olympic gold medal since John Fields took the bantamweight title at the Paris 1924 Games at 16 years of age.

Congratulations champions!, Congratulations to all Olympic boxers!
