After collectively taking off the month of August, the boxing industry in Britain gets back to business with former two time British title challenger Jonathan Thaxton hoping to retain the WBF lightweight title in his hometown of Norwich. Argentine import |
Eduardo Daniel Roman will look to keep Thaxton, 27-7 (14), from meeting his goal but it won’t be easy stopping the Norwich man’s victory march. The sturdy thirty-year-old has gone 8-1 (5) since giving Ricky Hatton one of the Manchester whirlwind’s most difficult bouts in 2000. In the last five years, Thaxton has only come up short against the world class Eamonn Magee in a failed Commonwealth light welterweight bid.
Eduardo Daniel Roman, 29-3 (6), comes into the WBF title contest on the strength of winning eight of his last nine outings, all in his home country of Argentina. In fact, the thirty-two-year-old has never fought outside of his homeland before. Roman will try and follow the blueprint laid down by countryman Javier Osvaldo Alvarez who made his maiden voyage to the UK count by stopping WBU super featherweight titlist Michael Gomez in six rounds.
Should Thaxton turn back the challenge posed by Roman, it is Gomez that “Jono” will be targeting. Since losing to Alvarez, Gomez has announced his intention of moving up to the lightweight class and has been calling out British and Commonwealth champion Graham Earl. Before that bout can be considered, Gomez must prove himself capable at the higher weight and Thaxton has lobbied for the chance to meet the Manchester based brawler.
