Chambers vs. Lebedev Fight Planned For March Or April

Recent Heavyweight division drop out and Cruiserweight title contender “Fast” Eddie Chambers (36-3-0 18 KO’s) is considerably close to landing a clash with Russian WBA titleholder Denis Lebedev (25-1-0 19 KO’s).

The top five ranked former Wladimir Klitschko challenger told us in a recent chat that negotiations for the fight are going rather well after weeks of back and forth well-publicized rants. They hope to soon draft up contracts for the contest, but of course, nothing is yet in stone.

With luck, the fight should hopefully land on a Main Events bill between late March and early April, seeing Lebedev’s last bout was barely a few weeks ago in his homeland of Russia, where he scored a savage knockout of Colombian Santander Silgado in four short rounds.

Television, and of course, the venue is a question mark, but both fighters seem sold on hosting the bout in the United States. NBC Sports Network has a deal with Main Events, televising all but one show on the network in the last year, but it has been said that a larger network could also televise.

Chambers, age 30, has had mixed fortunes of late, going a weak 1-2 over the course of three years. A late knockout loss to Ukrainian World Champion Wladimir Klitschko was a large 2010 setback, but a slick decision win against fringe contender Derric Rossy got Chambers back on track in 2011.

Next, there were cancellations of fights against Tony Thompson and Sergei Liakhovich before Chambers was found on the short end of a highly controversial decision to Poland’s Tomasz Adamek in June of last year, which prompted the move down to Cruiserweight.

Lebedev, age 33, has been a bit more active, although, 2011 was flat out cringe-worthy for the Russian, as he defeated dramatically faded former American greats Roy Jones Jr and James Toney.

With father time trampling behind him, Lebedev had a better 2012, scored crushing stoppage wins against contenders Shawn Cox and Santander Silgado, the latter victory securing the WBA crown.

Lebedev is now headed back to reality, leaving Russia for another legitimate battle.
