All looked lost yesterday for WBF lightweight titlist Jon Thaxton when his opponent for this Saturday night, Eduardo Daniel Roman, pulled out of their scheduled twelve-round bout to take place in Thaxton’s hometown of Norwich, England. Today, however, the situation is now stabilized with the entry of Vasile Dragomir into the fray. The former Romanian lightweight belt-holder Dragomir, 13-4-1 (8), has gone 2-2 this year fighting at welterweight and light welterweight. The highest profile contest to date for the Bucharest resident happened in February of this year when Dragomir was knocked out in the third by unbeaten welterweight Michael Jennings, who went on to become the current British champion.
Thaxton, 27-7 (14), won the vacant WBF belt in his most recent ring appearance by knocking out Frenchman Christophe De Busillet in April. The Norwich man has strung together six straight victories and aside from an early loss has only come up short in his career against American super journeyman Emmanuel Augustus and the cream of British boxing including Ricky Hatton, Eamonn Magee, Jason Rowland and Colin Dunne.
The stocky Thaxton hopes to use this bout as a stepping-stone to get to former domestic super featherweight king Michael Gomez, now ready to begin campaigning as a lightweight.
