Super Bantam Jazza Dickens Targets Kid Galahad

Hot Liverpool prospect James ‘Jazza’ Dickens is still hopeful that a clash with fellow rising star Kid Galahad can happen, but says he’s happy to fight anyone else if not.

The 21-year-old gave up the chance of representing Team GB at last summer’s London Olympics in order to turn professional and has so far impressed in 13 outings.

And 2013 started well for the affable Merseyside southpaw when the British Boxing Board of Control nominated him to contest the vacant English super-bantamweight crown.

However, it seems that fellow nominee, Kid Galahad, isn’t keen on the proposal, recently telling his local newspaper that he is not “fussed about the English title”.

“Kid Galahad is a step up and a test and that’s what I want,” Dickens said. “I hope he doesn’t pull out, but if he does the board will have to nominate someone else to fight me and I will still get a shot at the English title.

“I’m just over the moon that I am to get a title fight. I’m ready now and honestly not bothered who I have to fight.

“I expect my manager Steve Wood and Hatton Promotions to put a winning bid so I box at home, but if Mick Hennessey (Galahad’s promoter) bids big for Channel 5 to show the fight then more people will see me win the title and therefore I’m easy about where it happens.

“I’m just bouncing round the gym waiting for it. Believe me I will be ready!”

Promoter Ricky Hatton said: “The super-bantamweight division is one of the most talked about in Britain with Quigg and Frampton, but both would be well advised to keep an eye on Jazza Dickens, who I think could be the dark horse of the group.

“I also think a fight against Kid Galahad will bring Jazza right to the forefront as it’s a fight I feel he most definitely wins.”
