WBC Rewards Hennessy Boxing\’s Witter, Froch and Pickering

There is plenty of good news for Hennessy Sports fighters from Cadiz in Spain, where the WBC is staging their annual convention. This afternoon, (October 5th), two members of the team, British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Carl Froch and Commonwealth and European super bantamweight champion Esham Pickering, have been moved into the governing body’s top ten, whilst Junior Witter has consolidated his position as their number one contender at light welterweight.

“So far, so good,” said Mick Hennessy, who has made the trip to Cadiz to represent his fighters at the convention. “We put a strong case forward for each of the trio and every one has been responded to favourably.

“Off the back of his wins earlier this year over then WBC #11 Henry Porras and Matthew Barney, who only lost what most considered to be a hometown decision to WBC #1 light heavy Thomas Ulrich, Carl has been moved to number eight (from 13th) at super middleweight.

“Esham has also been rewarded for beating proven contenders whilst treading the traditional title route. Given that he has recently won and twice defended the prestigious European crown we have been able to get him moved to number seven (from 13th) at super bantamweight.

“The other good news is that Junior Witter has kept his well deserved rating as number one contender to light welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather.

“There were attempts at pushing others before him in the background, but given that we outlined Junior’s recent performances against world class contenders, they came to nothing.

“As a result, Junior will now either be installed automatically as mandatory to Mayweather or ordered to fight a final eliminator against another leading contender – the decision on this is being made tomorrow.”

For Hennessy, this is all part of securing genuine fights for his boxers.

“From day one, Hennessy Sports have had a policy of promoting fights for traditional titles. This goes from area right up to world level,” he explained.

“That is why it was so important for Froch, Pickering and Witter to be given their due out here by such a prestigious governing body. They are all now within a stones throw of challenging for a WBC world title.

“You certainly wont see any of them fighting for fringe titles in the future. They are too talented for that and for me that is not what boxing is all about.”
