Boxing Round by Round: Diego Corrales – Jose Luis Castillo

ByAdam Matson 09/10/200512/05/2013

The sequel to last April’s thrilling fight of the century took place tonight on Showtime, at Las Vegas’ Thomas and Mack Center. It was a cracking contest but this time Jose Luis Castillo proved to be the better man, landing the perfect shot that Diego Corrales could not recover from.

Round one begins with the fighters meeting each other in the center of the ring and Castillo immediately landing a left hook. True to his word, Chico brings the fight to the inside. Castillo is working the body the entire first minute. Its already another battle of hooks. At the two minute mark Castillo lands a jarring left hook to the jaw of Corrales. Castillo throws a right hook that lands to Corrales’ jaw at the minute thirty mark. Castillo lands a lead left hook after being warned for a low blow. The round has been thrilling so far, with Castillo being much more accurate with his punches then Corrales. They picked up where they left off, Castillo’s round.

Castillo 10-9 10-9

Round two: The round begins with a clinch after a Castillo jab, the fighters are right on each other, right inside. Castillo lands two punches to the belt line of Corrales, while Corrales counters with a right hook to Castillo’s jaw. Castillo is working the body a lot, and is beating Corrales to the punch virtually every exchange. A big right uppercut to Corrales’ jaw, followed by a right hook from Corrales, they get on the inside and duke it out trading left hooks. Castillo is actually the one creating any distance this round. At the thirty second mark Corrales lands three hooks to the side of Castillo’s head, only to be followed by a left hook by Castillo to Corrales’ chin. Terrific round! I think Corrales needs to fight at more of an angle, and fight to the side of Castillo so he can utilize his terrific right cross.

Castillo 10-9 20-18

Round three: The round starts with both fighters meeting in the center of the ring again and trading hooks. Castillo is working the body at the beginning of the round, and is beating Corrales to the punch. Both fighters, like in the last round, are working the body early. Corrales has yet to throw a jab, and Castillo is taking advantage of that by throwing jabs and straight rights. Castillo lands a straight right to Corrales’ jaw and Corrales backs up dazed. Corrales gets back inside though and toughs it out. At the closing of the round, Corrales lands two hooks to Castillo’s jaw. Corrales has a cut on his left eyelid.

Castillo 10-9 30-27

Round four: The round starts with them again meeting in the center of the ring and Castillo immediately lands a left hook to Corrales’ jaw, and Corrales goes down. Corrales can’t get up and THE FIGHT IS OVER!.

Jose Luis Castillo gains revenge and moves to 53-7-1 (47) while Corrales sees his mark fall to 40-3 (33)

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

What was the major factor for Usyk to perform so poorly against Rico? Rico better than expected, skilled kick boxer, huge size, awkward style, surprise element? Age of Usyk finally showing up? • Jai Opetaia saying what many of us think 26/05/2026
Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
