Boxing Olympian Estrada fights again Nov. 23

ByBoxing Press 15/11/200515/11/2005

R.I. Convention Center in Providence

U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada (4-0, 1 KO) returns to action in his hometown Thanksgiving Eve, November 23 against Jeremy “Superstar” Brooks (4-2, 2 KOs) in a six-round bout at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence.

Estrada, who turns 25 later this month (Nov. 30), is on a mission to prove that he is going to be an even better professional than amateur. His match against Brooks marks the fifth fight of heavyweight Estrada’s 11-month pro career after completing his remarkable amateur career with a 261-14 record in the United States. Jason was the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years (2001-2003) in a row. The 2003 Pan-American Games gold medal winner went on to represent the U.S. in the super heavyweight division at the 2004 Olympics.

Brooks stands 6-4 and has weighed in as much as 268-pounds. “Brooks is no turkey,” Estrada said about his Thanksgiving Eve opponent. “He’s a big man and I want to finish out the year in an exciting way. I’m ready to fight. I’ve really trained hard for this fight and I hope that there’s another huge crowd at the Rhode Island Convention Center. I want to move up to eight rounds as soon as possible. In 2006, I want to get some quality wins under my belt and break into the rankings.”

Estrada’s much-anticipated pro debut last December 10 ended in a unanimous four-round decision in his favor against Joseph Kenneth at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Four months later Jason put Jerry Simpson to sleep at 2:35 of the opening round with a devastating knockout that resulted in Simpson being taken out of the ring on a stretcher and evaluated at a nearby hospital (he was okay).

He followed June 17 with a unanimous four-round decision against Demetrice King (7-6), in which, King’s corner tried to stop the fight by throwing in the towel (only the referee can stop a fight in Rhode Island) and In his last fight (August 26), Jason floored Earl Ladson (10-6) three times en route to a unanimous six-round decision (60-51, 60-51, 60-51) in Providence.

As an amateur, Estrada defeated five contemporary professionals sporting a combined record today of 101-6-3, 67 KOs: former IBF world title challenger DaVarryl “Touch of Sleep” Williamson (22-4, 18 KOs), Malik Scott (22-0, 10 KOs), Malcolm “The Showstopper” Tann (16-2, 8 KOs), WBC Continental Americas heavyweight title-holder Donnell “The Real Touch of Sleep” Holmes (23-0-1, 22 KOs), and USBA & NABF cruiserweight champion Felix “Bad News” Cora, Jr. (17-0-2, 9 KOs).
