Magdeburg – Sergej Dzindziruk dethroned reigning WBO jr. middleweight champion Daniel Santos tonight at Bördelandhalle of Magdeburg, Germany with a unanimous decision.
In a highly exciting and competitive contest fought between two southpaws on a very high pace Dzindziruk knocked down Santos in round 8 with a right hook to the chin and won by scores of 115:112 on all three score cards. Dzindziruk improved to 31-0 with 21 knockouts. Santos dropped to 29-3-1 with 20 knockouts.
Dzindziruk joined WBA bantamweight champ Wladimir Sidorenko and WBO light heavyweight title holder Zsolt Erdei as the third current world champion of the Universum Box-Promotion stable.
In a woman world title fight Regina Halmich retained her WIBF flyweight crown against American arch rival Elena Reid with a close unanimous decision. The official scores were 96:94 twice and 97:93. Halmich improved her record to 49-1-1 with 14 knockouts. Reid dropped to 17-3-5 with 5 knockouts.
Halmich and Reid had fought to a ten round draw on September 11, 2004.
