Amir Khan is to visit Oxfam’s Earthquake Response Programme in Pakistan on Saturday 17 December. The Olympic Silver Medallist will travel with Oxfam to Muzaffarbad, the capital of Pakistan administered Kashmir devastated by the October 8th earthquake. He will visit camps where Oxfam is providing shelter, water and sanitation for thousands of those displaced by the earthquake.

Khan, 19, will see for himself the extent of destruction caused by the earthquake that claimed the lives of an estimated 80,000 people and left a further 60,000 injured The UN estimates that 3.2 million people have been affected by the disaster.

“I have been moved deeply by the images that I’ve seen on the television showing the suffering of the survivors. I want to do everything I can to make sure that earthquake victims are not forgotten and that people receive the aid they need to survive the harsh winter. I hope my visit will helpkeep the plight of the survivors in the headlines.” said Khan

Oxfam Director Barbara Stocking will be travelling to Pakistan in the coming days welcomed Amir Khan’s visit.

“Amir Khan’s visit will help Oxfam keep the fate of the earthquake survivors in the news. Two months on from the quake there are many thousands of people still in need. In some areas people have begun digging graves in preparation for more people dying from the cold. The international community has still not responded with the resources that are urgently required.” said Stocking.
