Former British and WBU Super Featherweight Champion Michael Gomez was once one of the most pound for pound feared men in a British ring but after now losing two consecutive bouts by way of stoppage the Manchester based Irishman is facing a career crisis. Earlier tonight on a Brian Peters promotion in Dublin, Galway born Londoner Peter McDonagh put a grinding halt to Gomez’s initial foray into a higher weight class by stopping “The Predator” with a shower of blows in the sixth round. Journeyman McDonagh initially caught Gomez with a clanging left hand, stunning the much shorter veteran who was rendered unable to defend himself against the following leather avalanche applied by the underdog. McDonagh realizes the high point of his nineteen bout career, winning the vacant Irish Lightweight title in the process. Two other Gaelic standouts with world class aspirations were also on the bill.
Featherweight Bernard Dunne moved into the second year of his Irish campaign after a fourteen bout matriculation in America on the strength of an impressive victory over former IBO, European and British Bantamweight Champion Noel Wilders. Dunne, from Dublin, simply shocked Wilders with a forceful attack that kept the Englishman on his heels from the opening bell. The end came in the sixth when a worn down Wilders was sent to the floor by a pair of ripping blows to the midsection before a hail of Dunne offense convinced the third man in the ring to bring the proceedings to a close. The sharp punching victor now sets his sights on the energetic European, Commonwealth and British Super Bantam
Supremo Michael Hunter.
Gearing up for a springtime challenge to brash British and Commonwealth Super Middle ruler Carl Froch, Belfast lefty Brian Magee blasted through Belarussian chancer Daniil Prakapsou in just two rounds.
