At a well attended press conference at the Europa Hotel in Belfast today the eagerly awaited British and Commonwealth super-middleweight title fight between Nottingham’s Carl Froch and Belfast’s Brian Magee was announced. The fight will take place at the famous King’s Hall in Belfast on the 31st March 2006.
At the top table there was a vacant chair where Carl Froch should have been, but Froch did fax to say he would be unable to attend because of prior commitments, he has a warm-up fight on the 17th February, but guaranteed that he would be available to do press conferences and interviews with the press once that fight is out of the way.
Brian Magee made it clear that he knows that a lot of responsibility lays with him as a win would bring big time boxing back to Belfast and is aware that home support will help his cause.
Magee is not intimidated by all of the talk coming from Carl Froch and was quick to dismiss it as just cheap talk.
“This will be the first 50/50 fight that Froch has been involved in and the first when an opponent will hit back and be able to cope with him.” said the Belfast man.
Frank Maloney also unveiled the latest addition to the Maloney Promotions stable, top Irish amateur heavyweight Scott Belshaw who will make his professional debut on the 31st March card.
Harry Hawkins manager and trainer of Brian Magee, was quick to praise the Maloney’s for making this match.
“When the Magee vs. Calzaghe fight was cancelled boxing lost a lot of creditability in Belfast and it needs a fight of this magnitude to get boxing back on the map over here.
“The Maloney’s have put their hands in their pockets and now the fight fans of Belfast should support this one in their numbers and come and attend what should be a great evening of boxing”
