Hobson also revealed that his £1million offer to Joe Calzaghe to move up and fight Woods has been turned down by Calzaghe’s promoter Frank Warren. Hobson made his offer to Warren mid-week but, sadly, the offer was rejected out of hand.
“Believe it or not, Warren’s fax said our offer was “not acceptable’”, said an incredulous Hobson. “We were offering Joe Calzaghe between £300,000 and £400,000 more than he’d ever made for any fight in his life but Frank turned up his nose like we’re offering up a toasted dogshit sandwich.”
Hobson went on: “Is it any wonder that the American media call Warren “the Warden’? He’s kept Calzaghe’s talent behind bars for years and, even though Calzaghe escaped for 12 rounds and wowed the world with his performance against Jeff Lacy, it appears poor Joe was only on a day-release scheme.
“Sadly, it looks like Joe’s back in the Warden’s full custody.
“The shame is, I know Calzaghe wants the fight with Clinton. He’s even said in interviews this very week that his big ambition in boxing now is to win a light heavyweight title. We’re giving him that chance, will pay him more than he’s ever been paid, we’re prepared to co-promote with Warren, we’re not asking for options, we are prepared to look at making the fight for Wales and Joe won’t even have to risk his super-middleweight belts.
“If that’s not good enough for Warren, what is?”
