Boxing’s Golden Boy To Be Honored By Hispanic Newspaper Chain

ByBoxing Press 20/04/2006

For close to 15 years, boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya has captivated the world with his exploits in and out of the ring. ImpreMedia’s newspapers, in particular, La Opinión, the leading Spanish language daily newspaper based in Los Angeles, has been following De La Hoya’s accomplishments from the beginning to the peak of his career. From earning multiple world boxing titles to capturing a Grammy nomination, De La Hoya also started his own promotional company and has been giving back tirelessly to the community.

This year, De La Hoya is scheduled to take on the final two fights of his illustrious career – beginning with a May 6th clash against super welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga. “The Golden Boy” will be honored by the number one Spanish language newspaper publisher in the United States, ImpreMedia, with a commemorative supplement about his career, his family and his success.

“This is amazing news for me, and I’m humbled by it,” said De La Hoya. “To come from where I came from and to have something like this published about me is a tribute to my parents and the guidance and support they gave me throughout my life. I thank ImpreMedia for this honor.”

“ImpreMedia’s in-depth coverage of Oscar de la Hoya was a natural fit. Oscar has a commitment to excellence in everything he does. And we have a commitment to excellent coverage for our Latino readers and sports fans throughout our national platform of ImpreMedia newspapers.” said Monica Lozano, CEO and Publisher of La Opinión and Senior Vice President of ImpreMedia.

De La Hoya’s upcoming fight against Ricardo Mayorga, appropriately titled, “Danger Zone” is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Don King Productions in association with Bacardi and will take place at The MGM GRAND Hotel and Casino on Saturday, May 6. It will broadcast on HBO PPV beginning at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST. The usually media-friendly Oscar has not been available for interviews because of the seriousness of this fight. However, he has contacted ImpreMedia to reach out to his fans. ImpreMedia has just launched an “Ask your question to Oscar” promotion from April 17 until April 21. Then on Saturday, April 29, a week before his fight, ImpreMedia will publish De La Hoya’s answers online at www.laopinion.com/zonapeligrosa .

ImpreMedia will produce the commemorative Oscar De La Hoya supplement and will publish it in its six markets, beginning with San Francisco (El Mensajero) and Chicago (La Raza) on April 30. Then the supplement will publish in ImpreMedia’s daily newspapers in Los Angeles (expanded version in La Opinión) and New York (El Diario / La Prensa) on May 1st, and in the Orlando / Tampa area (La Prensa) on May 4th. An additional 50,000 copies of the supplement will be distributed at Los Angeles’ Fiesta Broadway on April 30th where La Opinión will have a special Oscar de la Hoya promotion. It will also be available in hospitality suites on the day of the De La Hoya-Mayorga event on May 6th.

  • Chris Billam-Smith vs Ryan Rozicki 03/06/2026
Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. CBS became world champion when more talented British boxers like Okole and Riakporhe did not. In fact he beat both and forced them to go up to heavyweight. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

  • Jai Opetaia saying what many of us think 26/05/2026
Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
