Seven pupils from Middlehurst Special School, Stoke-on-Trent today visited the Impact gym where they spent about two hours in the company of Midlands Area Lightweight Champion, Scott Lawton. Lawton, who defends his title against Baz Carey on 6th May, has a sincere desire to help underprivileged young people in the North Staffs area:

“I’ve been very lucky, I had a good stable upbringing but far too many kids don’t and I would like to help in any way I can. I wasn’t a great achiever at school either but my family and boxing have given me many advantages in life. From boxing in particular, I have gained a lot of confidence and it has taught me to respect others; I think that boxing has a lot to offer kids like these.”
“I have really enjoyed this afternoon, it’s given me a real buzz to see these kids having a good time. They have all taken part enthusiastically and have shown a real interest.”
During the time they spent at the gym the year 10 and 11 pupils had the opportunity to talk to Scott, use much of the equipment and to get into the ring with Scott in order to practice their skills.
Brigita Brown of Middlehurst School said:
“This has been a fantastic opportunity for the students involved, they have thoroughly enjoyed it and have gained a lot from the experience. Many of our children suffer from low self-esteem and the school spends a lot of time on confidence building exercises with them. We do much of this through sport and the school is currently raising money towards achieving “Sports College’ status. Any links with local sporting clubs are useful and we would like to develop more. Today has been particularly beneficial because so much emphasis is put on self-confidence and fitness; non of us quite realised just how hard these boxers train, they must be some of the fittest athletes on the planet.”
Middlehurst Special School caters for children with moderate learning difficulties and emotional problems who, for one reason or another, don’t have their specific needs met within the mainstream education system. They accept children between the ages of 4 and 16 and have a dedicated staff that work towards raising pupil’s aspirations and academic achievements. Potential donors or anyone interested in organising fund raising activities to help the school to achieve “Sports College’ status should contact them by telephone on 01782 234612.
