Boxing Round By Round: Anthony Mundine – Danny Green

ByMitchell Jakins 20/05/2006

This past Wednesday saw the much awaited pairing of super middleweights Danny Green and Anthony Mundine, one of the biggest fights to ever grace Australian soil, at the huge Aussie Stadium in Sydney. After a close fight early, Mundine’s greater skill began to show and the ex-Rugby League star cruised to a unanimous decision win, taking the WBA number one ranking at super middle in the process. SaddoBoxing presents this exclusive round by round account of the action.

Round one: Green closes the distance quickly, aggressively attacking the body. Mundine so far showing good defence and seems to be still feeling Green out. Green seems to be winning the round because he had been much busier than Mundine. Mundine scores with a big right hand to close out the first but it wasn’t enough to steal the round. 10-9 Green.

Round two: Mundine starts throwing the jab and he is lightning quick tonight. Mundine circling, looking for an opportunity to throw his right. Green still being busy but isn’t landing too much as Mundine is showing great evasion. Whenever Green goes for a right hand to the face, Mundine counters with a right hand. Mundine now jabbing very well and it seems to be keeping Green at bay. Not much in the last seconds, mainly Mundine making Green miss and countering. 10-9 Mundine.

Round three: Green again closing the distance quickly; he knows he doesn’t want to be on the outside of Mundine. Green throws to the body again, looks like he’s planning to wear Mundine out with body shots. Different approach then expected as he is using the jab quite a bit. Green throws a big right but Mundine evades it. Mundine now measuring with the jab and lands a right hand. Mundine is being very accurate with his right hands. Green to the body again. Green walking forward and Mundine is in the corner. Mundine pokes his tongue out and then slams a right hand to Greens head. Green is getting frustrated by Mundine. Mundine 10-9.

Round four: Green to the body straight away…could be a bit low. Green coming forward and jabbing. Green throws a right hand to Mundine’s head but Mundine takes it on the gloves. Green jabbing more then expected. Mundine lands some right hands. Green seems to be missing a lot of punches, this could come back to haunt him in the later rounds. Despite missing, Green is keeping the pressure on. Mundine now countering on the ropes to end the round. This was a close one but I give it to Mundine as he was more effective with his punches. 10-9 Mundine.

Round five: Crowd is now chanting for Green as they seem to know he is behind on the score cards. Green goes to the body while the crowd chants for him. Mundine immediately responds with a right hand, deadly accurate…Green now responds with a right of his own. Mundine is standing in front of Green and is outboxing him. Green is still missing a lot. A big right by Mundine closes the round. Mundine seems to be really taking control now. 10-9 Mundine.

Round six: We are now at the halfway point and Green needs to step up his game. Green knows this and straight away throws his powerful right hand, but yet again it misses. Mundine now backing Green up and is just throwing jabs. Green responds with a very good jab and Mundine responds in kind. Green again misses a right and this will definitely take its toll if he can’t start landing. Mundine just seems to be stalking Green and looking to land his right. Green is on the ropes! Mundine unleashes a lightning fast combo to end the round. Mundine is showing massive improvement since the Kessler fight. Danny is trying but Mundine is making him miss. 10-9 Mundine.

Round seven: Mundine’s confidence seems to be rising and is now coming forward. A huge right is landed by Mundine and it looks like Green’s mouth guard might be out. No, it must have been sweat but that punch landed flush. Green comes forward and has Mundine on the ropes now, Mundine taunts and Green missing. Mundine is just plain outboxing Green right now, Green just can’t seem to land. A right hand uppercut scores by Mundine, Green pushes Mundine down through the ropes. Mundine gets up after being pushed through the ropes. Green attacking but not hitting much. Mundine is boxing on the back foot for the last seconds of the round. Another round for Mundine, 10-9.

Round eight: Green is showing some heart. He has been hit with some big rights throughout this fight and continues to attack. Green attacking, Mundine fires back with an uppercut and lands a right hand. Green stunned by the punch and tries to fire back but Mundine slams home another right. Green taking some punishment tonight and is now looking to land his own right hand but the round ends. Green might be getting tired. 10-9 Mundine.

Round nine: Green picks up where he left off and is looking to land his right and he hits one but no effect on Mundine and Mundine fires back. Mundine now covering up on the ropes before he turns the tables and now Green is on the ropes. Mundine unloads but Green covers up well. Danny seems to be fading in these late rounds. Green goes to the body and ends the round. 10-9 Mundine.

Round ten: Really, the same old thing is happening. Green is stalking and looking to land but is just missing. Green has Mundine on the ropes and lands some body shots, Mundine throws a big right and Danny slips on the logo (they are both slipping on the logo in the middle of the ring). Green nearly slips again and Mundine hits him while Green appears to nearly slip. Green looks to be angry about this but as the rules say, protect yourself at all times. Green now attacking but is just missing too much and seems to be tired. Clinch ends the round. 10-9 Mundine.

Round eleven: Big right hand and an uppercut is landed by Mundine. Mundine throws a combo and then slips. This is ridiculous, the logo is causing both fighters to slip all the time. The ref has people wipe the ring down quickly. Back to the action with Green on the offensive but Mundine hurts him with a right hand. Green recovers and throws his own right and it lands but Mundine shows no sign of being hurt. Green’s legs actually look a bit wobbly as the round ends. 10-9 Mundine.

Round twelve: This is where Danny is dangerous, in his second fight against Markus Beyer he nearly finished the German off in the last round and Mundine has to be wary now. They embrace in centre ring and this is great sportsmanship just before the round starts. Green goes to attack but Mundine is on his bike, he knows not to get too confident in this round. Mundine throws and lands two uppercuts. They may have hurt Danny but Green says “Bring it on!” Green just seems to be walking into right hands of Mundine. Mundine looks to have hurt Danny this round but it’s over. 10-9 Mundine.

SaddoBoxing Card: 119-109 Mundine
Official Score Cards: 118-112, 116-113 and 118-111 to the winner….Anthony “The Man” Mundine!

Mundine is quite humble and thanks Danny for fighting him and said that Danny put up a great fight and then tells everyone Mikkel Kessler is next. Danny is then interviewed and says he has no excuses and that Mundine fought great and was the better man on the night. Great sportsmanship here and a great fight.
