Thursday Night Boxing Results

The highest profile bout to take place last night was the IBO Super Bantam title fight between reigning champion Takalani Ndlovu and Giovanni Andrade at Carnival City, Brakpan, South Africa. Ex-WBO Super Flyweight title challenger Andrade simply couldn’t cope with the power of Ndlovu as the Soweto born “Panther” knocked out his Brazilian rival at :30 of the second round. Ndlovu, 26-3 (17), retains the IBO crown for the second time while 36 year old Andrade, 50-9 (41), may be finished at world level.

On the same bill Malcolm Klassen kept his South African Featherweight title with a twelve round points win over Willie Mabasa while Peter Mashamaite won the vacant South African Super Middle title by stopping Patrick Simelane in the third round.

In Temecula, California, the comeback of heavyweight Fres Oquendo continued as the former two time world title challenger outpointed Javier Mora to take the vacant WBO Latino belt. Oquendo, fighting at 30 lb heavier than normal, hurt Mora in the opening frame but couldn’t capitalize on the advantage as the contest went the full ten round distance. Oquendo improves to 26-3 (16) by taking the ringside scorecards 96-93 and 98-92 twice. Javier Mora drops to 20-3-1 (18).

Earlier on the card, hot super middleweight prospects the Dirrell Brothers both won their bouts. Olympic Bronze Medallist Andre Dirrell had his hands full with opponent Alphonso Rocha, having to come off the deck in the third in order to post a six round points win. His brother Anthony Dirrell had an easier time of it, stopping Juan Carlos Ramos with a single shot in the first round.
