Gonzalez Leads Way On Golden Boy Mega Boxing Card

WBO Bantamweight Champion Jhonny Gonzalez saw off that organization’s super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel last night, capping off a Golden Boy Promotions extravaganza from the Home Depot Center in Carson City, California. Gonzalez, 33-4 (28), took a departure from his normal slugging style and engaged Montiel, 32-2-1 (24), in a boxing contest. It was a close fight all the way but the bigger Gonzalez was the busier man over the twelve round distance and took a split decision 118-111, 116-112 and 113-115.

Heavy handed southpaw Daniel Ponce De Leon was also on the bill and retained his WBO Super Bantam crown. Ponce De Leon, 28-1 (26), cranked former WBO Latino Super Fly titlist Gerson Guerrero to the canvas in the second frame with a short right hand, starting an avalanche of leather that Guerrero never recovered from.

Welterweight Paul Williams continued his unbeaten streak as the lanky southpaw from Augusta, GA outslugged Argentine puncher Walter Dario Matthysse to grab the vacant NABO title. In a see-saw battle, it was Williams’ greater stamina that proved to be the deciding factor as the American pinned an exhausted Matthysse on the ropes in the tenth round and had to be pulled off, rescuing the South American tourist. Williams moves to 30-0 (22).
