After Jose Luis Castillo’s unexpected weight watchers fiasco on the scales yesterday, one of Australian boxing leading hopes, Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan, will be thrust into the white hot spotlight at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. The Sydney man will place his IBF and IBO Flyweight belts at risk against little known but highly successful Mexican slugger Luis Maldonado, 33-0 (25), over the course of twelve scheduled rounds. Born in Armenia, Darchinyan, 25-0 (20), burst onto the world scene in December, 2004 with an eleventh round stoppage over Irene Pacheco to annex the IBF crown. The 30 year old southpaw has defended that trophy three times since and picked up the IBO belt last March by stopping South African Mzukisi Sikali. Should Darchinyan get past Maldonado, a contest against the top man in the flyweight division, WBC Interim titlist Jorge Arce, could be on the horizon.
