Heavily favored British Bantamweight Champion Martin Power was upset on Thursday by relatively unknown South African tourist Tishifhiwa Munyai as the two vied for the vacant Commonwealth title at London’s historic mecca of boxing, York Hall on a Maloney Promotion’s bill. Despite applying himself fully to the task, the previously unbeaten Power, now 19-1 (8), could not effectively navigate the distance imposed by the much taller Munyai’s long searching jabs. The South African, now 10-0-1 (6), fought with a poise that far belied his modest resume and by the eighth frame had taken over the contest. In the ninth, Munyai was battering Power at will and forced the referee to make an ! unpopular stoppage after the London based British Champion fielded a full blooded whistling right hand.
On the undercard, London based Nigerian welterweight Ajose Olusegun, 17-0 (9), took a great step forward by knocking out the highly regarded British based Namibian Ali Nuumbembe, 15-2-1 (6), in the sixth round of their scheduled ten round contest.
