Two of the best super middleweights in the sport are set to meet in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 14 when WBC Champion Markus Beyer squares off against WBA kingpin Mikkel Kessler at the Parken Arena. For Kessler, 37-0 (28), it’s a chance to cap off a great run over the last two years that’s seen the tall Dane dominate former world champions Eric Lucas, Manny Siaca and Anthony Mundine. Beyer, 34-2-1 (13), is currently enjoying his third reign as WBC titilist and is coming off a cut induced four round draw against Australian based contender Sakio Bika in May.
The occasion will mark Beyer fighting outside of Germany for the first time in seven years and at 35 years of age, the Bremen based southpaw could be hard pressed to avoid the rushes of perhaps the strongest fighter in the division. Kessler, eight years younger than Beyer, is considered the favorite and should he annex the German’s WBC belt, look for the Copenhagen native to face Britain’s Joe Calzaghe in a truly massive showdown early next year.
