Ringside Boxing Report: Dmitriy Salita – Shad Howard

ByRichmann 27/07/2006

Broadway Boxing, courtesy of Dibella Entertainment, was back at the Manhattan Center in New York last Thursday night. In the main event Dmitriy “Star of David” Salita took on late substitute Shad Howard in a scheduled 12 round welterweight bout. In round one, Salita got off to a quick start by establishing his jab to set up punches. It was clear that Salita was the quicker of the two as he outboxed Howard easily. In round two, Howard attempted to get in on the inside to try and close the gap, having some success and connected with a beautiful right hand. Much of the same action follows in round three.

By the fourth, the two fighters engaged in toe to toe action with Salita getting the better of the exchanges. In round five, Howard was able to penetrate Salita’s defense and connect with numerous right hands, appearing to make it a competitive bout. Howard was very effective when working on the inside and enticing Salita to brawl. Unfortunately, the fight was stopped before the sixth round began at the advice of the referee due to Howard sustaining and ear injury in round five. Salita improves to 25-01 (15). According to Salita’s publicist Ron Goldman, “The Star of David” is looking to fight a top ten welterweight contender for his next bout.

In the co feature, Curtis “Showtime” Stevens, also known as “The Chin Checker”, got his chin checked by Marcos Primera, 20-15-2 (8) in the final frame of a scheduled eight round super middleweight bout. Stevens came into the contest officially weighing 164.5lbs, which may have been too low. For his previous bout, he weighed 174.5lbs. As usual, when the first bell sounded, Stevens came out aggressive, but appeared sluggish. He still managed to outwork his opponent and caused a cut to the left cheek of Primera.

It was clear in the second round that Primera was not there to just be an opponent, but rather there to win. Primera began to return fire, giving as good as he had gotten from Stevens. By the third round, Primera was walking Stevens down and scoring nicely with combinations. More of the same action followed in rounds four through six. In round seven there was a momentary stop to the action when Primera sustained a questionable low blow. In round eight, Primera was able to score a knockdown of “Showtime” much to the surprise and dismay of the pro Stevens crowd.

After receiving an eight count, Primera swarmed Stevens with a barrage of punches. With Stevens not being able to defend himself by fighting back, the referee waved the action off at 1:24 of the eighth round. Stevens drops to 13-1 (11).

Local favorite Maureen Shea, 6-0-1NC (3), of the Bronx, added another win to her resume by defeating Olga Heron, 4-6 (1). Her debut last May on Broadway Boxing ended in a close split decision loss. That loss was later ruled a no contest when her opponent tested positive for a banned substance. Shea appeared determine to make the most of her second chance. She used good movement to outbox her slower opponent, fought on the inside when she had to and cruised to a decision victory. Ringside judges scored the bout 59-55 and 60-54 twice, all for Shea.

In a heavyweight bout, Derric Rossy improved to 12-0 (7) by posting a unanimous decision over Demetrice King, 9-14 (7). Rossy used good boxing skills to outbox his lesser skilled opponent but King did have his moments in this bout by connecting with right hands and giving Rossy a bloody nose. Official scores were 59-54 and 58-55 twice for Rossy.

Prenice Brewer and Roberto Acevedo fought an exciting four round junior welterweight bout with both fighters making their debuts into professional boxing. From the beginning of the first bell, both men went at it in toe to toe action, a pace that continued throughout the fight. This was perhaps the most competitive contest of the evening and in the end was scored a draw.

In a scheduled four round junior welterweight bout, Jamelle Hamilton, 2-0 (2), stopped Delbert Sommerville, 1-1 (0), at 2:25 of the first round.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport.
