British cruiserweight Mark Hobson finally captured the WBU belt on his third attempt as the Huddersfield, England based battler outpointed his defensive minded opponent, Pavol Polakovic, in the headlining match of Frank Warren’s DeBRA charity show at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London last night. For Hobson, 26-4-1 (13), the win wasn’t pretty as Polakovic, 11-2 (1), turned up with the sole ambition of finishing the contest on his feet and the towering Northerner had to give up his British and Commonwealth crowns in order to accept the WBU title.
In a far more entertaining scrap, flashy super feather prospect Kevin Mitchell, 21-0 (15), had all he could handle in the form of Andrey Isaev, 12-1 (4), but the “Dagenham Destroyer” managed to stop the Belarussian tourist on a cut in the eleventh frame. Mitchell started the fight off strong but was soon matched by the wilful Isaev as a leatherstorm broke out between the two. In the last few rounds Mitchell began to pull away as his opponent was clearly bothered by the laceration above the eye before referee Dave Parris called a halt to the proceedings at 1:37 of the eleventh round.
