Anthony Crolla is hoping that a win over Gavin Rees will earn a chance for against the WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns.
Crolla knows he cannot overlook the danger Rees will bring when they fight on the Matchroom Sport’s June 29 show at the Bolton Arena.
However a win could secure a possible fight with Burns later on in the year and for Crolla it is an opportunity too big for him to miss.
“Ricky Burns has got the WBO title so hopefully I will get a chance if I beat Gavin Rees.
“That does not mean I am looking past Rees. I actually rate him and have the utmost respect for him as a fighter.”
Regardless of the matchup occurring close to Crolla’s Home Town, Gavin Rees will begin the fight as a clear favorite.
Anthony Crolla (25 4-1) stated: I know I’m going into this fight as the underdog and that has always brought out the best of me in the past, I’m also a huge believer in “styles make fights” and I believe I have got the style to beat Gavin Rees.
“It will be a really tough fight and I might need to go through hell and back but I truly believe this is a fight I can win.
The Welshman held a version of the world title up at light welterweight division and recently challenged quick – rising boxer Adrien Broner for his WBC lightweight crown in America. He also has a better record against common opponent in Derry Mathews.
