Mzuvukile Magwaca Retains Title Against Martey In Battle Of Cape Town

ByWorld Boxing Federation 10/06/2013

At the luxurious Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, Cape Town, South African boxing fans were treated to an outstanding display of boxing when local superstar Mzuvukile Magwaca retained his World Boxing Federation All Africa Light Flyweight title.

Mzuvukile Magwaca put on a magnificent performance and dominated resilient and game, but outclassed, Ghanaian Joseph Martey before eventually forcing referee Eddie Marshall to intervene in round nine, much to the delight of the sold-out crowd.

At that point the champion, who moves his professional record to 12-0-1 (8), was pounding a helpless Martey (8-3, 2 KOs), on the ropes, making it a well-timed stoppage.

In the evening’s co-feature WBF International Lightweight Champion Vusumzi Tyatyeka was given a tough challenge from Hungarian Gyorgy Mizsei Jr., although the home-man was in control most of the fight.

Tyatyeka eventually won on points after an entertaining bout, with judges Elroy Marshall, Clifford Mbelo and Rassie Erasmus scoring in his favor with 117-111, 118-110 and 118-110 tallies. Tyatyeka is now 17-2 (14), and Mizsei falls to 12-6 (7).

In Differdange, Luxembourg, Roman Belaev of Russia captured the vacant WBF Intercontinental Welterweight title when he scored a stunning knockout of Kenyan Nasser Athumani in round nine.

The fight, which was fought in an almost empty venue as most spectators had left by 1:30 AM when the bout started, was competitive throughout, and the more experienced Athumani gave Belaev plenty to think about with his southpaw style, and often gave as good as he got.

After round eight Athumani had some balance problems, but insisted on continuing and was allowed to by referee and doctor. However, in the following round he was caught by a powerful shot from Belaev while turning away and the fight was over at 1:03 of the round.

At the time of the stoppage judge Domique Schmit had the bout 77-75, Hans Joachim Klage 79-73 and Artur Ellensohn 80-72, all in favor of Belaev who improved his record to 12-0 (10). Athumani drops to 23-10-3 (17).
