Claire Grace guaranteed herself at least a bronze medal at the EU Women’s Senior, Youth and Junior Championships in Keszthely, Hungary today.
The Irish welterweight beat Croatia’s Jovana Vucic on a unanimous decision to book her ticket into Friday’s semi-finals. But there was last-eight disappointment for Kelly Harrington and Sinead Kavanagh after they lost their Senior light-welter and middleweight quarter-finals to Hungary’s Nagy Bianca and Nouchka Fotjin of Holland.
In the Junior semi-finals, current European Junior champion Amy Broadhurst, Grainne Gavin, Jacqui Lynch and Ciara Sheedy upgraded their bronze medals for at least silver following thrilling victories.
The Championships resume tomorrow. AIBA World No. 1 Katie Taylor meets Finland’s Mira Potkonen at lightweight in the afternoon session.
Taylor, who is aiming for her fifth EU title in-a-row, and Pothenen, will be in the ring at approximately 3pm (Irish time).
Claire Grace and Leanne Murphy will also be between the ropes in the Senior class Friday. The finals will be held Saturday.
