The price of the upcoming Mayweather vs. Alvarez “The One” PPV has been announced as $64.95 in the states, $74.95 if you prefer to watch it on HD.
That’s one expensive ask of the American public, especially as the undercard bouts have yet to be announced.
The fight card’s promoters, Golden Boy, have reportedly been saying for weeks now that they expect to break the PPV record of 2.5 million buys, which if that happens and Mayweather vs. Alvarez generates 2.6 million buys then we are talking roughly $162 million in gross revenue.
Bring to mind a famous PT Barnum quote?
Who knows, perhaps the main event will be a thrilling, back and forth tug of war in which we may very well see Mayweather finally get a loss on his record?
Nah.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is unquestionably a good fighter, but he’s no Jose Luis Castillo, if you know what I mean.
Let’s turn back the clock three years to May, 2010, the year Alvarez started facing name opposition, and take a gander at who he has fought since then.
Jose Miguel Cotto: a blown up former WBA lightweight title challenger.
Luciano Leonel Cuello: obscure Argentine light middle who had given Julio César Chávez Jr a tough time before junior learned to fight.
Carlos Manuel Baldomir: 39 year old former WBC welter titlist several years past it.
Lovemore Ndou: 39 year old former IBF light welter titlist several years past it.
Matthew Hatton: European level welter.
Ryan Rhodes: European level opponent.
Alfonso Gomez: former WBA welter title challenger.
Kermit Cintron: former IBF welter titlist several years past it.
Shane Mosley: 40 year old former three weight titlist several years past it.
Josesito Lopez: a blown up former NABF light welter titlist.
Austin Trout: reigning WBA light middle titlist.
So, we have to go all the way to April, 2013 to find Alvarez facing a current top light middle. The Trout fight was a good win for Alvarez, without a doubt, but it can’t erase the fact that he’s been heavily steered through a sea of aging, smaller or just plain lower level fighters to get to that point.
Does it look like Alvarez is being rushed into a Mayweather clash and is most likely going to get a serious schooling? Or will Mayweather vs. Alvarez “The One” herald the coronation of a new king?
For $64.95 you can find out.
