Anselmo Moreno Retains WBA Crown In Panama City

WBA bantam king Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno made his 11th successful title defense last night as the local man handily outpointing challenger William Urina at Megapolis Convention Center in Panama City, Panama.

Urina, 24-3 (20), had won seven in a row following his failed bid to unseat WBO super flyweight champ Omar Andres Narvaez two years ago but the Colombian slugger could not overcome the speed and skill advantages of Moreno, 34-2-1 (12), who won the all-southpaw clash by scores of 118-110, 118-100 and 116-112.

The victory marks the return of the San Miguelito based Moreno to 118 pounds following an attempt at the WBC super bantam crown last December, losing a unanimous decision to Abner Mares.

In a battle of Colombian fighters, Nehomar Cermeno, 22-5-1 (13), put the first loss on the record of Oscar Escandon, 22-1 (15), recording a split decision victory to capture the Interim WBA super bantam strap.

The WBA Female featherweight belt was on offer in a rematch between Ogleidis Suarez, 19-2-1 (8), and Liliana Palmera, 21-11-3 (15), as Suarez won the points verdict unanimously after ten rounds of combat.

Palmera returned to featherweight following a third round KO loss to Erica Anabella Farias for the WBC Female lightweight title this past March.

The pair initially clashed last October for the Interim WBA strap, with Suarez winning by seventh round TKO.
