Undefeated Black Country light middleweight, Kyle Spencer is hoping for a shot at a Midlands Title in the near future as he prepares for his first fight of the new season.
The impressive 23-year is in confident mood ahead of his showdown with experienced Jay Morris at the Copthorne Hotel Dudley-Merry Hill this Saturday, 14th September.
“I’m enjoying my boxing and feel the best I have in my career so far,” he said. “This is a strong warm-up fight for me to get rid of any ring rust but I’m very confident which is important. I’ve had a few months out of the ring since my last fight (in May) but I’ve kept myself ticking over.
“It’s important to have confidence in your own ability otherwise you’re going to make costly mistakes if you enter the ring with a weak mind. Hopefully I can get another win and have the opportunity to fight for a Midlands Title in January or February. That’s my main aim.”
Spencer has impressed in his two outings of 2013 to date – a first round KO of Jimmy Price and a hard-fought points victory over Dee Mitchell. He will be looking to make it a hat-trick of wins for the calendar year but insists he won’t take his opponent lightly.
“I respect any boxer who steps into the ring,” he added. “Jay Morris has had 59 fights and has been in with some good prospects. He’s tough and durable. In this game, one punch can change things, so I’ll respect him, like I respect all my opponents.”
Spencer is joined on the EJKO Promotions’ dinner show by Coops’ Gym stablemate Steven ‘Fierce’ Pearce and unbeaten prospect Lance Brooks. Local lad, Tipton’s Lee Glover, is also on the bill and Spencer believes home advantage will be key.
“Fighting in my hometown is always an amazing feeling,” he added. “All my supporters come out and crank up the atmosphere which spurs me on, so it’s definitely an advantage to me. I’m sure it will be to all the home fighters on the night.
“The Copthorne is a cracking venue. I’ve fought there before as an amateur boxer and haven’t lost there yet, so it will be nice to keep that record intact.”
