Last night at the Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, Kermit Cintron blasted his way to the vacant IBF Welterweight title by out slugging the game but outgunned Mark Suarez in five action packed rounds.
It was bombs away from the very first round as both combatants let fly with the heavy shots but the more experienced Cintron, 27-1 (25), now being trained by Emmanuel Steward, had the better focus, although it would take awhile for that quality to shine through.
Suarez, 25-3 (13), showed why he had gone undefeated for the last three years, tearing into Cintron in the early rounds with good effect until the ex-world title challenger began to find his range in the third frame.
By the fourth, the heavy fisted Cintron was booming two handed combinations off the head of Suarez, who could no longer keep up. The fifth round featured a hailstorm of leather from Cintron that Suarez couldn’t handle, taking a knee to try and weather the bombardment.
Suarez beat the count but was absorbing real punishment when Cintron resumed his assault, forcing a referee stoppage to end the beating.
Kermit Cintron joins the mix at welter and will be looking to face the winner of the upcoming Carlos Baldomir – Floyd Mayweather WBC Championship contest.
