Jason Quigley and Joe Ward – the current and 2011 European Elite champions – are two wins away from claiming gold at the AIBA World Men’s Elite Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The Finn Valley BC and Moate BC won their quarter-finals contests on unanimous decision in the middleweight and light-heavyweight divisions today.
Quigley beat Hungary’s Zoltan Harsca and Ward followed that up with victory over Russia’s Nikita Ivanov, who he beat in the 2011 European final in Turkey. Both Quigley and Ward are guaranteed to be taking home at least a bronze medal each.
London 2012 bronze medalists Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan, who moved up from light-fly to fly and fly to bantam for Almaty, and Tommy McCarthy bowed out at the last-eight stage today.
Barnes and Conlan lost to Uzbekistan’s Jasurbek Latipov and Vladmir Nikitin on unanimous decisions and McCarthy was edged out on a split decision by Argentina’s Yamil Peralta.
Thursday is a rest day at the 17th AIBA World Men’s Elite Championships since Havana 1974. The semi-finals and finals will be decided on Friday and Saturday.
