Lucas Browne has received an official letter of praise from the Australian National Boxing Federation for his historic Commonwealth title victory in England last month.
Browne, 35, halted Canada’s Eric Martel Bahoeli in the fifth round to become the first fighter from down under to hold the heavyweight version of the crown since the legendary Peter Jackson back in 1892.
In the letter, ANBF National Secretary Frank Hadley commended Browne for the patience and determination he showed in pursuit of the title – a journey which started in Hong Kong and ended with not one but two trips to the UK.
“We know that you represent Australia with great pride and your success in becoming the Commonwealth champion brings enormous respect, not only to yourself, but also to Australia and Australian boxing,” Mr Hadley added.
An overwhelmed Browne said: “I’m honoured to receive such praise from the Federation. I knew when I set out to box for the Commonwealth title that it was a big thing, but I didn’t realise that it was this big.
“The response I’ve had from people inside boxing and the fans has been phenomenal and I hope to do Australia proud by winning more titles and breaking more records.
“I’d like to thank Frank Hadley for his kind words and the Federation for the support they have given me throughout my career. I’d also like to thank my team because, without them, winning this title wouldn’t have been possible.”
Discussions are currently underway for Lucas’ next fight, which could be a defence of his new championship belt.
