Australian stylist Cameron “The Hammer” Hammond believes he’s ready for the deep end of the welterweight waters and aims to prove it against highly regarded Roman Zhailauov on July 5.
Zhailauov is rated in the top 15 by the WBA and has an unblemished 12 fight record, but Hammond says he’s more than up for the challenge and feels the fight gives him a chance to make a statement on the world stage.
At stake will be the vacant WBC Eurasia Pacific crown, so a victory for the 2012 Olympian from New South Wales will likely see him soar up the ratings of at least two sanctioning bodies.
“It’s a massive opportunity for me, a chance to make people really sit up and take notice. Zhailauov is a good boxer who is highly ranked, so if I win here hopefully it will give me more opportunities,” Hammond, 9-0 (4 KOs), said.
“I’m really looking forward to boxing in front of my supporters and I hope they can cheer me on to a huge win.
“Ricky Hatton, my promoter, is also coming to watch me box and that’s a big thing for my hometown of Moree because everyone remembers him for beating Kostya Tsyzu. It’s going to be a huge night.”
Matt Clark, Hammond’s co-Manager, added: “This is a massive test for Cameron and one we believe he is ready for. Zhailauov is ranked in the top 15 by the WBA. This is also for the WBC Eurasia Pacific Boxing Council title, so a win here is absolutely enormous for Cameron.”
Hammond v Zhailauov will be contested over ten rounds at the Town Hall in Moree and is being promoted by Danny Cheetham.
