David Oliver Joyce claimed his third successive European Union Elite Championships gold medal in Sofia, Bulgaria today.
The St Michael’s Athy lightweight, who won featherweight gold at this level in 2008 and 2009, beat Georgia’s Otar Eranosyan on a unanimous decision to finish on top of the lightweight podium and seal an historic hat-trick for Irish boxing.
But Irish captain Darren O’Neill and Michael O’Reilly were edged out on split decisions by Italy’s Valentino Manfredonia and France’s Christian Ossomo in the light-heavy and middleweight finals.
O’Neill, who was aiming for his second European Union gold, forced Manfredonia into two standing counts in the second round.
Ireland’s nine-strong squad will be bringing home one gold, two silver and one bronze medal from the 8th edition of the tournament in the Bulgarian capital.
