World Weekend Boxing Roundup

As the Summer winds down across the northern hemisphere, Boxing remains in an extended siesta but there was one world title contest that took place.

And that was cruiserweight Marco Huck’s 13th successful defense of his WBO title, tying Johnny Nelson’s divisional record, which took place at Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany

“Captain Hook”, 38-2-1 (26), faced undefeated Italian Mirko Larghetti, 21-1 (13), a former EU titlist whose numerical record was far superior than the list of names on his resume.

The fight itself illustrated the width in the gulf of experience between the two fighters as Huck didn’t have many problems blunting the ambitions of the challenger by margins of 118-110, 116-112, 116-112.

Does Huck have any serious challenges remaining in the cruiserweight class?

He most certainly does but given the business politics of the sport, it’s a long shot that he would get the opportunity to face some of the other champions in the division – IBF king Yoan Pablo Hernandez or WBC boss Krzysztof Wlodarczyk.

If the unification clashes did occur, Huck would have a difficult time but could probably wear down the mercurial Hernandez, who has stamina issues, often fading badly in the later rounds, if he could take the Cuban southpaw’s power shots.

Poland’s Wlodarczyk presents altogether different problems as the crafty Pole is as experienced as Huck but a better boxer and would be the favorite to unseat the WBO ruler.

For now, we’ll probably have to sit through Huck turning back the challenge of more underachieving rivals before any kind of real 50-50 fight takes place.
