Aussie Boxing Legend Dave Sands Back In The News

A public ceremony to unveil the upgraded memorial plaque to Aboriginal boxing hero Dave Sands (Ritchie) will take place on Tuesday December 19, 2006 at 11am at the corner of Broadway and Glebe Point Road in Glebe, Australia.

Hosted by Gadigal Information Service (Koori Radio), The Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council and the City of Sydney, the event will also commemorate Dave Sands’ 80th birthday year.

The event MC will be Claude Williams and speakers will include Aboriginal boxing legend George Bracken, a representative from the City of Sydney, Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council chairperson Rob Welsh, Community leader Lyall Munro, Boxing Historian Michael J. Clarke OAM BA and a member of Dave Sands’ family.

Partners for the event include Dunghutti Elders Council Aboriginal Corporation, The NSW Veteran Boxers Association, Historian Michael J. Clarke, the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame and Australian National Boxing Federation.

Media partners for the event include The Glebe, The Newcastle Herald, the Macleay Argus, 2SM, Vibe Magazine, Koori Mail, National Indigenous Times and Fist Magazine.
