Pass The Sapporo: Japan’s Otake Planning To KO Quigg

ByMatchroom Boxing 07/11/2014

Hidenori Otake will be the toast of Japan if he takes WBA Super Bantamweight title off Scott Quigg after his sponsors vowed to name a beer after him if he returns with the belt from the sold out Echo Arena in Liverpool on November 15, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

The Japanese champion Otake travels to the UK on the back of four successful defences of the title he won back in August 2012 and is part of the emerging force of Japanese boxing and is aiming to join Takashi Muira, Shinsuke Yamanaka and Tomoki Kameda as World champions from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Otake was quick to praise Quigg’s all-round ability, the challenger said he will not leave it to the judges in Merseyside.

“I’m not content with just being the challenger, and I’m not going to England just for the memories – I’m ready to give everything to bring home the belt,” said Otake.

“Quigg looks like he is strong, and hits hard. He’s also good at controlling the distance – he has many good qualities but in boxing, you never know what will happen until you get in the ring. Since we’ll be in enemy territory, it will be tough to win on points. So I’m going for the knockout.”

Quigg’s clash with Otake is part of a huge night of action in Merseyside as Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew meet in a hotly anticipated rematch.

WBA Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell puts his strap on the line against Columbian Walberto Ramos in the second World title bout on the bill, while there’s action for three of Britain’s top Super Middleweights as James DeGale MBE faces Marco Antonio Periban, his bitter rival George Groves meets Denis Douglin and Callum Smith tackles Nikole Sjekloca in a WBC title eliminator. Heavyweight sensation Anthony Joshua MBE defends his WBC International title against Michael Sprott in a British title eliminator and promoter Eddie Hearn is set to add more names to the bill soon.

  • Daniel Dubois v Joseph Parker 30/10/2026
These two could face one another 30th January 2027. They were due to face one another before Dubois pulled out at the last minute. Parker will not have fought in 15 months since he lost to Fabio Wardley and was banned for using cocaine. Dubois will be fighting after destroying Wardley this month so he is keeping very busy. Dubois would be better waiting for […]

  • Haney does not want to fight Shakur 23/10/2026
I’ve seen their sparring videos on YouTube. And I can see why Haney is having all of this hullabaloo before signing on to fight Shakur Stevenson. He knows he can’t beat Shakur. Plus, coming off of that ass-whipping he got from Ryan Garcia, steroid claims aside, he knows Shakur will cook him and he does not want to have another legitimate loss on his record. […]
  • Ryan Garcia v Floyd Mayweather? 23/10/2026

  • Why did we believe Morrison would have beaten Mercer? 22/10/2026
Why was anyone giving Tommy Morrison a chance in that fight? That fight went the way it was supposed to go, with Ray Mercer winning even though that ko was probably one of the most brutal you would ever see in boxing. Check the facts, Mercer beat Morrison in the amateurs. Handily as well. Mercer was the champion… Mercer was the heavy favorite. 3 posts - 2 pa […]
  • I just realize how scared Spinks was ahead of his fight against Tyson 22/10/2026
Did you guys stop to appreciate how frightened Spinks was? Even as a trained fighter like himself, you could see the visible fear in his eyes. He knew he stood no chance of winning. He also was probably thinking about how bad those punches were going to hurt. lolol… I could swear I saw him trembling in the ring when Tyson’s music came on and started his walk […]
