There was a big fight card on Wednesday at the Basket-Hall Arena in Kazan, Russia with heavyweight Alexander Povetkin headlining the bill.
The former WBA champ and current WBC mandatory challenger Povetkin, 30-1 (22), fought through an early cut to outbox towering veteran Mariusz Wach, 31-2 (17), for most of the clash until the contest was halted in the 12th and final round due to a cut suffered by Wach.
American based Pole Wach didn't have much trouble in hitting the shorter Povetkin, something that doesn't bode well for the Russian's future WBC title challenge of champion Deontay Wilder, but wasn't active enough to seriously trouble the ex-WBA king.
The curse of Rocky Marciano struck again last night as IBF super lightweight champ Cesar Rene Cuenca failed in his bid to go to 49-0 as he was counted out at 2:44 of the sixth round after he and challenger Eduard Troyanovsky crashed together to the canvas and Cuenca did not continue to fight.
Cuenca, 48-1 (2), was making his first defense and failed to equal heavyweight Rocky Marciano's legendary undefeated record as Troyanovsy, 23-0 (20), is now the IBF champion.
Reigning WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev, 28-2 (21), fared far better in his title defense, bashing up American based challenger Lateef Kayode, 21-1 (16), before producing a stoppage at 1:22 of the eighth round.
Kayode, who failed in his big for the Interim WBA heavyweight title last year, was down in the seventh round after taking many hard shots from the southpaw titlist, based in Chekov.
There was a big upset on the bill as former world title challenging cruiserweight Ola Afolabi, 22-4-4 (11), knocked off IBO kingpin Rakhim Chakhkiev, 24-2 (18), by KO at 1:44 of the fifth frame.
