World Weekend Boxing Roundup: De Carolis Picks Up WBA Title

It was one of the slowest weekends in the sport for quite some time but there was one high profile contest that took place on Saturday at Baden Arena in Offenburg, Germany with the vacant WBA super middleweight title on offer.

Squaring off in the ring were 20 year old German KO specialist Vincent Feigenbutz and 31 year old Italian veteran Giovanni De Carolis in a rematch just three months after their initial bout saw Feigenbutz have to climb off the canvas in the first round before winning a very controversial unanimous decision for the Interim WBA crown.

The Italian visitor was intent of preventing another controversial points loss to the local man and set a hot pace from the start. De Carolis, a former Italian middleweight and regional super middle titlist who had taken Arthur Abraham the distance in 2013, proved to be too fast for the less experienced Feigenbutz to deal with.

De Carolis took the early rounds on quickness and activity, keeping the shorter slugger at a distance. But the effort of doing so began to slow the visitor down and Feigenbutz’s big youth advantage came into play as he caught up with his adversary.

The local man wasted no time in putting leather on De Carolis but the greater experience of the older man helped him avoid getting caught flush with any punch.

The middle rounds went back and forth with neither fighter truly able to take control but De Carolis wouldn’t buckle and used angles to frustrate Feigenbutz.

Perhaps sensing he might not win the cards this time if the contest went the distance, Feigenbutz began to throw caution to the wind in the later rounds, looking to end matters but was himself nailed with a massive shot from De Carolis, who jumped on his antagonist and pummeled Feigenbutz until the fight was stopped at 0:32 of the 11th.

De Carolis wins the WBA super middleweight title to improve to 24-6 (12), while Feigenbutz sees a four year, 20 contest win streak snapped.

The undercard featured cruiserweight Noel Gevor, 20-0 (10), retain his WBA International strap for the first time with a 99-91, 99-91, 98-92 victory over former world title challenger Valery Brudov, 42-7 (28), while heavyweight Dereck Chisora, 25-5 (17), defeated Andras Csomor, 14-9-1 (12), at 2:08 of the second round.
