Upton Faces Maughan For Irish Crown April 23

Unbeaten Pauly Upton will box for his first title as a pro when he squares off with Terry Maughan at The Deco in Northampton, on April 23.

The oldest of the Upton brothers headlines Hatton Promotions’ and Black Country Boxing’s latest Midlands extravaganza in a clash for the vacant Irish super-welterweight title.

27-year-old Pauly was an Irish national champion as an amateur and he’s keen to show he’s one of the Emerald Isle’s finest in the paid ranks.

“It’ll be an honour to be Irish champion as a professional,” he said. “I won two All-Ireland titles in the amateurs and they are my proudest achievements in boxing, so winning a pro title is the next step.

“I’ve not seen much of Maughan and there’s only one video of him on YouTube, but I know the guy who beat him for the title before, Dee Walsh, stopped him in two. That doesn’t mean he’s not a good fighter, though. He’s got a good record and everyone who gets to fight for a title has to be decent.

“I don’t pay any attention to past results anyway. I’m going to go in there and concentrate on what I need to do to get the win and fulfil my dream of being Irish champion. I’m excited about the idea of fighting over ten rounds because I think longer fights bring the best out of me.”

Upton vs. Maughan tops a superb evening of boxing that will also feature Anthony Upton as well the fifth professional outing of Market Harborough’s Reuben Arrowsmith.

Swadlincote’s Zach Parker and Northampton’s own Jamie Spence also feature, while Drew Brown will make his pro debut.
