Daws Gets Third Crack At European Following Nieto Fiasco

Carshalton’s Lenny Daws and Madrid’s Ruben Nieto will again clash for the European super-lightweight title after Daws’ promoter, Mick Hennessy, struck a deal with Team Nieto to stage the rematch in England before the summer.

This will be Daws’ third crack at the European title and comes as a result of a controversial disqualification loss to Nieto in December.

That night Daws was ahead on all three scorecards going into round ten of an all-out war when he was inexplicably disqualified by referee Freddy Rafn for an alleged deliberate head-butt. The decision sparked widespread condemnation and the European Boxing Union (EBU) were quick to order an immediate rematch between the pair.

“This is great news for Lenny Daws, who more than deserves to become a European champion, and great news for all the fans who witnessed a classic first time round but felt robbed of a conclusive ending,” said promoter Mick Hennessy.

“The Daws-Nieto rematch gives both boxers the chance to set the record straight and finish the fight properly this time.

“I’ve no doubt it will be another ‘Fight of the Year’ contender and I’ve no doubt Lenny Daws will be crowned the new European super-lightweight champion.”

The specific date and venue of the Daws-Nieto rematch will be announced soon.
