Mlungisi Dlamini and Zolani Marali In Friday Night WBF Title Action
Last night at Community Hall in Giyani, South Africa, Johannesburg man Oscar Chauke made the second defense of his domestic super bantamweight crown with a twelve round decision over Sprinkaan “The Ringmaster” Khongoane.
The two met before in 2001 with Khongoane taking a six round decision and revenge had been brewing for a long time for Chauke, 21-4-2 (6), who had won seven straight bouts on the trot.
Despite a second round trip to the canvas, more of a slip than a knockdown, Chauke controlled the pace of the bout throughout the contest and never let his rival get an offensive scheme together.
Khongoane, 25-6-2 (9), had been out of action for the last year and a half and at 32 years of age could be nearing the end of the line as a serious contender for the domestic title.
On the undercard, two time South African Super Feather title challenger Gabriel Phakula, 21-4 (8), stayed busy by flooring his opponent twice in the third round before the corner of novice Peter Adams, 3-12-1 (2), stopped the slaughter in the fourth.
On Friday at the Emnothweni Casino in Nelspruit, Mlungisi “The Shark” Dlamini, 15-0-1 (9), annexed the vacant WBF Lightweight belt in brutal fashion, canvassing Ivan Orlando Bustos, 21-10 (3), four times before stopping the Argentine fighter at 2:25 in the fifth. It was a sterling performance by Dlamini who shelled Bustos with a withering two handed assault that never let up.
Also at Emnothweni Casino, WBF Super Bantam kingpin Zolani Marali, 17-1 (11), had much more of a fight on his hands as he faced opponent Hevinson Herrera, 10-2-1 (6). Marali controlled the action from the outside for the first half of the bout, but the Colombian visitor rocked the champion with a riveting right hand that had Marali in trouble and on the floor in the sixth round.
After that Marali played it safe, tying up Herrera whenever the tourist got on the inside and managed to avoid getting caught again by the heavy handed South American, cruising to a points victory.
