Boxing Info: Tyan Booth – Darren Gethin

ByBoxing Press 21/03/2007

Tyan Booth hopes to become the latest star to emerge from the Ingle production line and can take a step towards that goal by winning his first title in Nottingham on Friday.

The Nottingham welterweight contests his first title as a professional against Walsall’s Darren Gethin when he fights for the Midlands Area Welterweight Championship on the Hennessy Sports and GoldenPalace.com “Cobra’s Hood’ event at the Nottingham Arena.

Booth has won nine of his ten fights so far after emerging from the same amateur boxing club in Nottingham as Carl Froch, the British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion who faces the highly-ranked Russian Sergey Tatevosyan in a 12-round contest as main event on the same show.

Booth is promising his home city crowd a better display than his last at the same venue in November.

The 23-year-old improved his record with a four round points win over Peter Dunn, but admits he was not happy by the performance.

“I didn’t get a good reaction from the crowd that night because I dropped down to the level of my opponent, but there will be no holding me back this time,” said Booth.

Tyan has high ambitions for himself after moving away from his home city to be based in Sheffield, where he trains at the Wincobank Gym under the watchful eye of Brendan Ingle and his sons John and Dominic.

“I’ve made a few sacrifices for my boxing to get where I am,” he said. ”I gave up a nice home in Nottingham to sleep on a few floors in Sheffield so I could be close to the gym.

“Things are better now and winning this title will move my career on. The title is already mine and training at the gym is really paying off.

“I liked Naseem Hamed’s style when I was growing up and he came from the same gym. He was a world champion as Junior Witter is now. I spar with Junior who is so sharp and fast, as well as Esham Pickering.

“I’m getting world class sparring with them as well as with some bigger guys, so that is only going to help get me to where I want to go. The sky is the limit to what I can achieve.”

Tyan has been quizzing gym-mate Lee Noble about Gethin, who lost on points to Noble last month. Darren also lost on points to Hennessy Sports standout welterweight John O’Donnell after eight rounds in December.

“I’ve spoken to a couple of lads from the gym, which has helped and I’m planning on putting on a show,” added Tyan.
