Boxing Writer Kevin Iole To Receive BWAA Award

Kevin Iole, who on May 1 will join Yahoo! Sports as a columnist, has been selected for the Boxing Writers Association of America’s Nat Fleischer Award for excellence in boxing journalism.

The Fleischer Award is the highest honor the BWAA can bestow on a writer and has been presented since 1972. The winner is determined by a fraternity consisting only of past Fleischer winners.

The honor will be presented at the 82nd annual BWAA Awards Dinner on Friday, June 8, at the Copacabana in New York.

During Iole’s tenure at the Las Vegas Review-Journal, he established himself as one of the country’s most prolific boxing writers. He is the second Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter to receive the honor. Royce Feour was selected for the Fleischer Award in 1996.

Iole has worked at the Las Vegas Review-Journal for almost 17 years. He has been named Nevada Sportswriter of the Year four times by the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters. The Nevada Press Association selected him for its Outstanding Journalist Award in 1999.

The graduate of Point Park College in Pittsburgh previously worked for the Valley News Dispatch in Tarentum, Pa., and the Burlington Free Press in Burlington, Vt.

Major award recipients at this year’s dinner include: Manny Pacquiao (Edward J. Neil Trophy for “Fighter of the Year), Freddie Roach (Futch-Condon Award for “Trainer of the Year”), Somsak Sithchatchawal vs. Mahyar Monshipour (Harry Markson Award for “Fight of the Year”), Steve Albert (Sam Taub Award for “Excellence in Broadcast Journalism”), Lee Samuels and Ricardo Jimenez (Marvin Kohn “Good Guy” Award), Larry Merchant (James J. Walker Award for “Long and Meritorious Service”), Ron Scott Stevens (James A. Farley Award “For Honesty and Integrity”) and Muhammad Ali (Pat Putnam Award “For Perseverance.”)
