Tunstall based welterweight, Doherty is targeting a British Midlands Area title challenge before the end of the year and boasts a 100% record from his five pro starts. Doherty has been matched to fight the relatively inexperienced Gareth Perkins from Swansea in a six round contest. Perkins has won and drawn one each of his two senior contests to date.
Doherty, an ever present in the Impact gym, is facing his sixth contest in 18 months. By contrast, it will only be Perkins’ 3rd fight since winning his pro debut in February 2004; his last bout was against Paul Porter last November.
On the face of it Doherty would appear the hungrier of the two men and Jimmy will also benefit from a significant height advantage over the 5’ 3” Perkins, measuring 5’ 11” himself. Reportedly strong, Perkins does come forward and will be looking for a victory however; Jimmy will need to guard against body shots from the stockier man.
Cobridge’s Danny Johnston will be looking to improve his 4-2-0 record and to extend his 3 fight unbeaten run when he faces off against the Bristol man Danny Gwilym in a 6 round light-middleweight contest.
Gwilym’s stats read 5-7-0 with his most recent victory being scored on points over journeyman Kristian Laight in November 2005. Johnston defeated, the veteran of over 100 bouts and former IBF world title contender, Howard Clarke on points at the Kings Hall in February this year.
The respective records of the two men suggest an evenly matched contest although local favourite Johnston does benefit from a very vociferous support. Gwilym, on the other hand, is used to boxing away from home and is unlikely to be daunted by a hostile reception.
Shelton featherweight Imran Khan’s entire career in the professional ring spans less than two minutes. Khan scored a first round knockout victory over Sammy Stewart in his debut despite having been sent sprawling to the canvas himself by a left-hook.
Khan is scheduled to meet Bradford’s Shaun Docherty. Docherty has seen out a total of 24 rounds in his four-fight career and is coming of the back of a 6 round points win over veteran Anthony Hanna last December. Docherty has racked up 1 win 2 losses and 1 draw during his short career.
Werrington heavyweight Alex Ibbs, Burslem light-heavyweight Justin “Ritchie’ Jones, Alsager welterweight Aaron Thomas and Chester welterweight Chris Goodwin make up the remainder of the home boxers on the seven fight card.
