Last night John Duddy brought back boxing to New York’s famed Beacon Theatre and the transplanted Irishman may not have had a spectacular send off for his last fight in the US before his upcoming Irish tour but it was a win nonetheless as the 27 year old blanked opponent Dupre Strickland over ten rounds.
The action got started with a bang as Duddy dropped Strickland in the first round but the 37 year old from Louisiana beat the count and managed to cut the unbeaten prospect over an eye in the second.
From that point on the bout took on a repetitive course with Duddy mounting short campaigns inside, working the body and head before getting back out.
For short southpaw Strickland, Duddy was simply a step too far up the competitive ladder for a fighter that had previously faced limited opposition in his local Louisiana/Mississippi area.
But survive the Southerner did as he managed to stretch Duddy the distance for only the fourth time in a 20 fight career.
Duddy moves to 20-0 (15) by gaining a 100-90 and 100-89 (twice) advantage on the scorecards while Strickland drops to 18-2-1 (7).
The native Ulsterman Duddy is scheduled to make his boxing debut in Ireland with a headlining appearance on July 7 at the 2,000 seat National Stadium in Dublin.
On the undercard, light middleweight Pawel Wolak, 15-0 (10), posted a second round RTD over Anthony Little, 7-7 (1), and middleweight Peter Quillin, 12-0 (11), stopped Victor Paz, 9-4-1 (1), in the second.
