European Boxing News: Wladimir Klitschko, Lamon Brewster, Paolo Vidoz

By Per Ake Persson

The fight for the vacant European Junior Middle title between Zauerbek Baysangurov from Ukraine and Frenchman Husseyn Bayram could go ahead July 7 in Cologne, Germany in a supporting bout to IBF and IBO heavy champ Wladimir Klitschko´s defence of the titles against Lamon Brewster.

“Could go” means there are a lot of technical and political problems to be worked out as K2 that promotes the show are working with non-EBU members GBO and GBA as supervisors for the undercard. Should there be a European title on the bill the whole set of officials (timekeepers, doctors etc) must come from an EBU member.

Ex-European heavy champ Paolo Vidoz will have surgery on his hand later this week. Vidoz lost a close – closer than the scoring indicates – to current European ruler Vladimir Virchis on May 19 in Hamburg but says he suffered the hand injury two weeks before in sparring with John McDermott.

The Lauri brothers, Giuseppe and Antonio, will both challenge for European Union titles June 23 in Varese, Italy. Antonio face welter champ Jan Zaveck while Giuseppe is in against Michele Di Rocco.
