In looking to create a more “radical” atmosphere of music and sound for Saturday’s world championship boxing pay-per-view event at Madison Square Garden, promoters Bob Arum and Todd duBoef of Top Rank knew there was only one man for the job; world-famous DJ Justin Hoffman, nephew of radical activist and Chicago seven alumnus Abbie Hoffman.
Hoffman, a native of the Boston area, is the DJ at Tryst at Wynn Las Vegas, where he spins the Las Vegas night life until dawn.
“In the clubs, I’m the heart of the party but for Saturday night’s fight, I’m only there to enhance the atmosphere,” said Hoffman.
“The fight’s are what the people came to see, but in between bouts I’m going to entertain the crowd and maintain the energy. I am treating this like the biggest party in sports.”
As soon as Hoffman finishes his gig at Tryst at 4:45 AM on Saturday morning, he will catch a 6:45 AM flight to New York. A special elevated platform perch has been constructed for him so that he can oversee the Madison Square Garden crowd as spins his music.
In addition to DJ Hoffman, Top Rank has installed additional lights throughout the arena to work in conjunction with Hoffman’s music.
Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Prize Fight Boxing and Madison Square Garden, “X-Plosive!” will be broadcast live, Saturday, June 9, on HBO Pay-Per-View, from the main arena at Madison Square Garden.
Projected to be a complete sellout with over 19,000 fans in attendance, the card will be headlined by undefeated welterweight champion Miguel Cotto defending his title against two-division world champion Zab Judah.
The four-bout pay-per-view portion of the card will begin at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
