Unbeaten prospect on Frank Maloney’s Johanneson – Kirakosyan European Title card
John Fewkes’ career has stepped up a gear with the announcement of his bout with skilful Tontcho Tontchev, 37-5 (21), at the Metrodome in Barnsley, England on July 13.
Fewkes, 14-0 (2), has been taken along slowly since his first appearance in September 2004 which resulted in a second round stoppage of Mark Dane.
This victory was the first of 14 consecutive successes for the Glyn Rhodes managed 21 year old light welter and Rhodes believes former European champion Tontchev is an ideal opponent.
“Boxing is all about taking chances,” he said. “The one thing you can’t buy is experience. Sooner or later I have to let him off the leash and see how good he is.
“We have to see what he can do at world level. This is a good learning step-up fight.
“Tontcho Tontchev would be a great scalp for John to have on his record but to get beaten by such an experienced fighter would be no big deal; but if he beats him it would be a real step forward.
“At this stage of John’s career he is exactly the sort of opponent he wants as Tontchev knows all of the tricks. In John’s last two bouts against Scott Haywood and Craig Watson, he found it all too easy and there was a little bit of complacency.
“Watson is a good fighter but never at any stage did John have any problems. This opponent will keep him on his toes. I want the people in the boxing scene to see how good John is. Tontchev is 34 but is still a good opponent.
“There is no doubt that John could be a British or European champion or even box for a world title in four or five year’s time.
