Boxing In Japan: Matsushita Retains OPBF Title

Earlier today at the City Sogo Gym in the Kobe suburb of Takasago, local hero and domestic bantamweight titlist Masayuki Mitani made an unsuccessful bid to unseat reigning OPBF Champ Rolly Matsushita, suffering a dramatic stoppage at 2:09 of the 12th and final round.

Mitani, 20-2 (10), came into the bout riding a ten fight win streak, including two successful defenses of the Japanese title, but was unable to shake the confidence of Japan based Filipino Matsushita, 23-6-1 (13).

The shorter Matsushita drew on the experience gained from multiple regional title fights at fly, super fly and bantamweight, by riding out the storm from Mitani before stopping the exhausted Takasago man in the final round with a barrage of punishment.

Also on the bill, Akashi flyweight Junichi Ebisuok, 15-10-3 (6), reversed his career path by winning for the first time in three bouts via a very close ten round majority decision over ex-longtime WBC Minimumweight titlist Jose Antonio Aguirre, 34-7-1 (20).

On Saturday at Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, local southpaw super bantam Toshiaki Nishioka, 29-4-3 (17), won his sixth bout in a row following a failed bid to topple WBC Bantam titlist Veeraphol Sahaprom three years ago with a seventh round KO of Colombian visitor Jean Javier Sotelo, 19-5-1 (11).

The undercard featured undefeated super feather Yoshimitsu Yashiro, 18-0 (10), who kept his record pristine with a seventh round stoppage of durable Thai veteran Muangfahlek Kiatwichean, 16-11 (10).
